Advertiser Staff

Kelii Kimi made a four-run first-inning stand up with five strong innings to lead Kamehameha-Hawai'i over Kailua, 5-3, tonight in a quarterfinal of the Wally Yonamine Foundation state baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Warriors (12-3) play fourth-seeded Saint Anthony (10-3) at 11:30 a.m. today in one quarterfinal.

Kimi went five-plus innings, allowing three runs (two earned), seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts to get the win for the Warriors. Kawika Cazimero added two scoreless innings for the save.

Kili Vierra gave up five runs, 11 hits and a walk in seven innings for the Surfriders (11-3).

The Warriors, aided by two errors, scored four in the first off Vierra on RBI singles by Kolten Wong, Trysen Cosier and Kelii Kimi. A fourth run scored on a fielder's choice grounder from Russell Kackley.

The Surfriders cut their deficit in half in the third. Zach Akamine was hit by a pitch to start the inning, took third on Preston Nakata's double to right and scored on Kale Sumner's flare single to right-center.

With runners at second and third, Kainoa Uemoto struck out swinging on a wild pitch, allowing Nakata to score and Sumner to take third with the score now 4-2.

Kili Vierra walked to put runners at the corners, bringing up Kenny Ellis, who quick fell behind 0-2.

That's when the left-handed hitter was pinch-hit for by the right-handed hitting Jared Tamanaha, who was hit by Kili to load the bases.

But Kili struck out Jared Iha and got Rob DeMarsh to pop out to second to leave the bases loaded.

Kailua cashed in on the Warriors' first error of the game in the fifth to pull to 4-3 With one out, Tamanaha reached on a throwing error, took second on Iha's sacrifice and scored on DeMarsh's flare single to left-center.

The Warriors cushioned their lead with a run in the sixth. Kimi led off with a walk and courtesy runner Ross Macanas took third on Russell Kackley's chop single to right. With runners at the corners, a passed ball scored Macanas to make it 5-3 and sent Kackley to second. Kackley took third on Makana Cazimero's single to right, but Kackley was thrown out trying to score on Reece Macanas' fielder's choice grounder to third. Tyson Goo flied out to center and Wong grounded out to first to end the inning.
