Four UH officers will form bike patrol on campus

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa is implementing a security bicycle patrol for the 300-acre campus, officials said at a news conference this morning.

Four of the campus' 41 officers will patrol regular shifts on bicycles built to the same specifications as those used by Honolulu police officers.

The officers underwent a nationally certified training program, which included a 75-mile bike ride.

"Our response to situations will be quicker and we'll be out there among the students more," said UH-Manoa director of security Neal Sakamoto.
