UH West O'ahu graduates say farewell to 2-year campus

The University of Hawai'i's West O'ahu commencement ceremony, set for 9 a.m. Saturday, will be its last as a two-year institution.This fall, UH West O'ahu will officially become a four-year baccalaureate institution and will welcome its first-ever incoming class of freshmen.
About 115 students will receive baccalaureate degrees this semester, Jean Osumi, dean of student services at UH West O'ahu, said in a news release issued by the campus.
Seven students will be receiving certificates. Of the graduates, 36 will be receiving their baccalaureate in business administration, 15 in humanities, 13 in public administration and 51 in social sciences.
The commencement ceremony will be held at Leeward Community College's Tuthill Courtyard.
University of Hawai'i Regent Ronald K. Migita and University of Hawai'i President David McClain are scheduled to give brief remarks during the ceremony.
Deborah Hoopai of Kapolei, one of the graduates, will speak on behalf of the graduating class.
UH West O'ahu has been a two-year, upper division, baccalaureate degree granting campus for the past 30 years. Last November, the university's Board of Regents approved UH West O'ahu's transition from a two-year to four-year baccalaureate degree-granting campus. Earlier this year, recruitment efforts for the first class of freshmen were undertaken by the campus. To date, 67 applications for Fall 2007 have been received, according to the news release.
