Rainbows beat LaTech in WAC softball tourney opener

Hawai'i scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to defeat Louisiana Tech, 5-2, in the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament today in Fresno, Calif.

The No. 12 Rainbow Wahine (46-9), the tournament's top seed, play second seed Fresno State tomorrow. Fresno State beat New Mexico State, 3-2.

Louisiana Tech took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Ashley Cameron. UH closed to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run when Kate Robinson reached first on a grounder to the third baseman, allowing Clare Warwick to score.

UH scored four runs on four hits in the second, scoring an RBI double by Kathryn Grimes, RBI singles by Tanisha Milca and Tyleen Tausaga and a sacrifice fly by Warwick. Valana Manuma opened the inning with a single.

Smethurst (17-7) struck out 10 and walked one.
