Big Island resident finds explosives behind home

Advertiser Staff

An ordinance disposal team was called in last night by the Hawai'i County Fire and Police Departments to remove what is believe to be unexploded ordinances behind a Big Island home.

Just before 2 p.m. yesterday, HFD responded to a resident's call that she discovered what appeared to be dynamite in cases with military markings in two separate storage structures behind her residence at 292 Lyman Ave. in Waiakea that were very old and seldom, if ever used.

Big Island police secured Lyman Avenue between Andrews Avenue and Baker Avenue, evacuating residents while they investigated the unexploded ordinances.

Upon entry into storage units the disposal team found several spools of detonation cord, blasting caps both electrical and fuse types, several cases of training simulator charges class 1.4 explosive, and shotgun shells and other small arms ammunition.

All products were bagged, secured and removed from the site for proper disposal.

There was no announcement as to who the explosive material belonged to or how long the material had been in the shacks behind the private residence.
