Kahuku school back in session today

Advertiser Staff

Students at Kahuku High & Intermediate School will be returning to class today following the cleanup of a pesticide or chemical smell that forced the school to close since last Thursday.

The Department of Health conducted tests and declared the campus to be free of contaminants earlier this week, but some adults continued to express mild discomfort, primarily throat constriction, in the affected upper part of the campus Tuesday morning so school officials kept students and staff away one more day.

Last Friday, the Department of Agriculture was looking into whether the odor came from a turf farmer nearby who was testing a pesticide on his crop.

Samples were taken to determine if residue in the classrooms is the same as the pesticide, but the results won't be known for two to three weeks.
