Advertiser Staff

The latest installment of the Eddie and Myrna Kamae "Legacy" series of documentaries, "Keepers of the Flame," airs at 8 tonight on PBS. The award-winning film profiles three women who were key to preserving Hawaiian culture — scholar and linguist Mary Kawena Pukui, hula master 'Iolani Luahine, and songwriter and educator Edith Kanaka'ole. Up till now, "Keepers" has been seen only at film fests, including Pacifika in New York and the Hawaii International Film Festival, and private screenings. It will also be made available to schools.

Hilo's memory lane

Watermark Publishing's latest addition to its Small Town Series guidebook line takes you back in time — in Hilo. "Exploring Historic Hilo" ($8.95) by Leslie Lang is a collection of old photos of Hilo, each with an informative caption, that corresponds to a fold-out map. You can take a virtual trip down memory lane, or use the book as a tour guide while actually walking down Kamehameha Avenue. Find out about the only remaining Kress building in the country, and the nine-lives 100 Cafe, among 77 other spots. Available in bookstores statewide or at www.bookshawaii.net.
