The University of Hawai'i softball team produced a grand slam of honors, sweeping the top four Western Athletic Conference awards.

The WAC named first baseman/designated player Tyleen Tausaga as the top player, Kate Robinson as the top pitcher, catcher Katie Grimes as top freshman and Bob Coolen as top coach.

Five Rainbow Wahine were named to the All-WAC first team: Tausaga, third baseman Clare Warwick, second baseman Alana Power, center fielder Kaulana Gould, and Robinson as a utility player.

Five were named to the second team: Grimes, shortstop Valana Manuma, outfielders Brandi Peiler and Tanisha Milca, and pitcher Justine Smethurst.

"It surprised me a little bit," said Robinson, who could have been named best player after leading the WAC in homers (18), RBIs (65) and slugging percentage (.774). As a pitcher, she was 15-0 with a 1.56 earned-run average.

Tausaga, who was named to the first team for the third consecutive year, was the only WAC starter to hit .400.

Grimes hit .400 in 17 WAC games.

"It's nice for our players to receive the attention," said Coolen, who won his second WAC coaches' award. "It showed how hard they worked. It was nice for everyone to see that we have talented players."

The Rainbows, who are the No. 1 seed after winning the regular-season title, will play Louisiana Tech today in the WAC Tournament in Fresno. Smethurst will be the starting pitcher.

If they win, they will play tomorrow afternoon. If they lose, they will play a second game this afternoon.
