Rainbows' Wichmann leads WAC heptathlon

University of Hawai'i's Annett Wichmann set a school record with 3,337 first-day points to take a commanding lead in the heptathlon yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Fresno, Calif.

The junior from Jena, Germany won the high jump with a personal-best 5 feet 10, captured the shot put with a throw of 42-8.25, and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.73 seconds), and fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.22).

Hawai'i's Mallory Gilbert is sixth with 2,765 points. The senior from Clovis, Calif. tied her heptathlon bests in the high jump (5-8.75) and shot put (34-5.25), finishing second and fifth, respectively. She also placed ninth in both the 100 hurdles (16.40) and 200 dash (28.14).

Utah State's Carrie Yost is in second with 3,129 points and Idaho's Darcy Collins was third with 3,005.


TENNIS

NO. 1 BYUH ADVANCES

Dori Magas and Anna Anikanova each won a doubles match and a singles match as the top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women routed Emporia State, 5-0, yesterday in the opening round of the NCAA II National Championships at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The defending national champion Seasiders improved to 30-0.

Also yesterday, the Hawai'i Pacific men's and women's teams won their opening-round matches.

Jan Hroch and Daniel Llarenas teamed for a doubles victory, then each won a singles match as the Sea Warrior men beat Washburn, 5-1.

Stephanie Bigom teamed with Anastasyia Ageychik to win a doubles match and Bigom added a singles win as the Lady Sea Warriors crushed Northwest Missouri State, 5-0.


SOFTBALL

SEA WARRIORS HONORED

Hawai'i Pacific freshman pitcher Sherise Musquiz and outfielder Tajia Acierto were named to the Daktronics All-West Region second team yesterday.

Musquiz was 14-8 with a 1.42 ERA and 59 strikeouts. Acierto batted .360 and had a .971 fielding percentage.

The Sea Warriors open West Region play against Hawai'i-Hilo today on the Cal State Stanislaus campus in Turlock, Calif.
