High influx of box jellyfish found in Waikiki

More than 600 box jellyfish have been found on Waikiki beaches so far this morning and ocean-goers are warned to stay out of the water today.

"Today was predicted to be the high influx," said Emergency Service spokesman Bryan Cheplic. "Over 600, that's a lot."

Yesterday, lifeguards reported treating more than 20 stings.

The most commonly affected area is Waikiki Beach, especially in the "pond" area 'ewa of the Kapahulu groin.

Other near-shore waters that have been affected include Hanauma Bay, Pokai Bay, Makaha Surfing Beach and Waimea Bay. There have also been occasional sightings and or stings on other north and west shore beaches.

Lifeguards will assess beaches for box jellyfish during the alert period. If box jellyfish are discovered warning signs are posted as warranted.

Persons stung by box jellyfish are advised to flush the sting area with copious amounts of white vinegar. Anyone experiencing breathing difficulty, muscle cramps,spasms, and/or persistent pain is advised to seek immediate medical attention. Lifeguard stations are equipped to treat this type of marine sting.
