Diamond Head Theatre presents a little bit of Paris pizzazz with the evergreen musical "Gigi," the tale of the young waif who becomes the object of affection of a high-society playboy. The show features memorable songs such as "Thank Heaven for Little Girls," "I Remember it Well," "The Night They Invented Champagne" and the title tune "Gigi."

Since 1978, the Hawai'i Craftsmen organization has celebrated raku, the 400-year-old Japanese style of pottery that has influenced contemporary ceramics around the world, with its annual Raku Ho'olaule'a. Among the events:

  • Tea bowl lecture, demonstration and workshop:

    CONCERT: MAY 19

    Scottish fiddle legend Alasdair Fraser and cello prodigy Natalie Haas will be in town to conduct workshops and perform a free concert at 'Iolani School with opening act and local Celtic fiddler Lisa Gomes. Fraser founded California's Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddle School, Celtic Connections Festival and the Sierra Fiddle Camp. He has released several critically acclaimed albums, including the Indie Award-winning "Dawn Dance" (Best Celtic Album of 1996), and more recently, "Legacy of the Scottish Fiddle, Volume Two" (2004). Haas is a recent graduate of Juilliard School of Music and has toured extensively with Mark O'Connor as a member of his Appalachia Waltz Trio. Hass and Fraser's duo release, "Fire & Grace," was awarded the Best Album of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004.

    FESTIVAL: MAY 19

    A night of hot dancing and live music is on tap at the Hawaii International Latin Music Festival, featuring Rolando Sanchez and Salsa Hawaii. Also featured: The Brazilian Connection and Tropikalia Samba Show, Hypersquad Dance Company; and Hawai'i's own Judi Palmeira, Yvette Nii, DeShannon Higa and Pedro Haro will be joined by Larry Cook (sax man from England), and Mario Sanchez (percussionist with Chepito).

    Join pianist/composer Shawn Livingston Moseley as he takes the stage for an evening of original music, art, dance and film at "The Storm Before the Calm." The lobby and courtyard of Mamiya Theatre will be transformed into an art gallery featuring pieces by Bryce and Judy A. NimitzMyers, Geoff Lee and Melissa Chimera. Musical guests include Jeff Peterson, Stephen Inglis, Jon Hawes, Jason Segler, Pumehana Davis Wadsworth; IONA Contemporary Dance Theater also performs.

    Christian "screamo" band Emery and opening artist National Product will rock Pipeline Cafe. Emery's introduction to stardom came after the January 2004 release of its critically acclaimed debut "The Weak's End"; a nonstop tour schedule followed, including stints with Hawthorne Heights, Eighteen Visions and others. The band's follow-up album "The Question" was released November 2006.

    Ron Bright, the celebrated director and mentor to a number of Broadway and community-theater actors, will be honored at "Spotlight on the Arts," a presentation of much song and dance. The benefit for Paliku Theatre will assemble a roster of Bright's former students, including Jade Stice, Jodi Leong, John Bryan, Tricia Marciel, Sonya Mendez, Michael Bright (his son, below), Johnson Enos, Christopher Lowe and others.

    COMEDY: JUNE 8

    Charlie Murphy, left, a breakout star from the defunct but hilarious "Chappelle's Show," is back to bring the laugh tracks from the TV to the stage. The older brother of actor-comedian Eddie Murphy, Charlie also is a successful Hollywood screenwriter and actor and is best known for his "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" sketches that recount his adventures as a former bodyguard for his brother. Recently Murphy co-wrote "Norbit," which starred brother Eddie. Charlie was last here in July 2005.

    The Florida-based Christian metalcore/hardcore/post-hardcore band Underoath, below, is likely to shake things up in a very loud way as it tours in support of "Define the Great Line," its third release. When "Great Line" was released in June 2006, it landed on the No. 2 spot on the Billboard charts, the highest debut for a Christian album since 1997. Opening artist is Pennylane.

    FESTIVAL: JUNE 14-17

    Shake those salsa sensibilities at the 7th annual Puerto Rican Cultural and Salsa Festival, also known as "Salsathon," right, celebrating El Dia de San Juan with the live beats of Son Caribe, Johnny Polanco, Orquestra La Verdad, DJ Rodney Perez, DJ Michelle. Other attractions include dance workshops, World Salsa Dance Championships qualifications, performances, novelties, inflatables, food and more. The kick-off party is from 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. June 14 at Rumours, Ala Moana Hotel ($10, www.salsathon.com).
