PARIS MAY GET A BREAK FROM JAIL

LOS ANGELES — Paris Hilton may spend far fewer than 45 days in county jail for violating probation because of state policies and jail overcrowding, authorities said yesterday.

Hilton could spend three weeks or less behind bars because of a state requirement that grants time off for good behavior and because of overcrowding in the system that has led to release of some inmates before they complete their full terms, county sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Last year, "Lost" actress Michelle Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 days in jail for violating probation after her drunken driving arrest in Hawai'i. She was released in hours because of overcrowding.

Hilton's time will be determined when she is booked into the county system, Whitmore said.

Hilton, 26, was sentenced to jail last week for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. A judge ordered her to report to the women's jail in Lynwood by June 5.

STING MUST PAY UNHAPPY EX-CHEF

LONDON — An employment tribunal ruled yesterday that Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, discriminated against their chef by firing her after she became pregnant.

The couple, who may have to pay substantial compensation, to be decided at a June 8 hearing, said they were "devastated" by the ruling.

Jane Martin, 41, said she had worked for the 55-year-old pop star and Styler for eight years, cooking meals for them and guests such as Madonna and Elton John. She said Styler grew unhappy after Martin became pregnant in 2005, making her work long hours and growing angry when she took time off work because of illness. Martin left her job under disputed circumstances in April 2006.

CANNON PROPOSES IN TIMES SQUARE

NEW YORK — Nick Cannon and Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks are engaged.

Cannon proposed on bent knee Monday in Times Square as the words "Selita will you marry me?" flashed on a giant TV screen, Cannon's publicist said yesterday.

Ebanks, 24, said yes. Cannon then gave her a 15-carat diamond ring he had helped design.

The 26-year-old rapper, comedian, actor and host of MTV's "Wild 'N Out" first met Ebanks at a Super Bowl party in Miami in February.
