'Green' award for cafeteria

Advertiser Staff

The $5.8 million cafeteria at Waipahu Intermediate School has been given the state Department of Education's first-ever "green design" award by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification award will be presented at the school Monday morning to DOE Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto.

The cafeteria design features 100 percent natural lighting of the dining area, a 15 percent reduction in annual energy consumption, a 5 percent reduction in irrigation water used and natural ventilation.

The 19,175-square-foot building was completed in April 2006.
