UH's Wichmann wins WAC heptathlon

University of Hawai'i's Annett Wichmann won her second consecutive Western Athletic Conference heptathlon title yesterday, setting a school record and earning an NCAA automatic qualifying mark at the WAC Outdoor Championships in Fresno, Calif.

The junior from Jena, Germany, amassed 5,557 points to shatter her own record by 144 points.

Wichmann won the javelin with 137 feet, 8 inches and 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 19.97 seconds yesterday. She placed second in the long jump with 17-11.25.

UH's Mallory Gilbert finished seventh with 4,439 points. The senior from Clovis, Calif., placed third in the long jump (17-7.5), fifth in the javelin (102-1) and 10th in the 800 (2:45.40).

After the first two days, the Rainbow Wahine are second with 12 points, three behind Idaho.


TENNIS

BYUH STAYS UNBEATEN

Maggie Deng and Anna Anikanova each won in doubles and singles as the top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women breezed past Florida Southern, 5-0, yesterday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA II National Championships at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The Seasiders (31-0) won all three doubles matches, and Deng won at No. 4 singles and Anikanova at No. 5 singles to clinch the victory.

Also yesterday, Lynn University ousted Hawai'i Pacific, 5-2, in a men's quarterfinals while the Lady Sea Warriors led Lynn, 2-1, after doubles play when the match was suspended by inclement weather.


SOFTBALL

WEISSKOPF LIFTS UHH

Sarah Weisskopf pitched a one-hitter and Haunani Haasenritter hit a solo homer as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Hawai'i Pacific, 2-0, yesterday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Region Softball Tournament at Turlock, Calif.

Weisskopf allowed a single to Ciera Senas to start the game, then retired every other batter except for a walk Anuhea Young with two outs in the second.

"The team played great defense and helped me maintain the one-hitter," Weisskopf said. "Our team motto is: 'One Team One Dream.' "

Leo Sing Chow added an RBI single for the Vulcans (41-11), who play Seattle today in the double-elimination tournament. The Sea Warriors fell to 34-16.

Earlier, Sing Chow was named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II All-Region first team and Haasenritter to the second team.


SURFING

HENDRICKSON ADVANCES

Maui's Tanner Hendrickson advanced to the fourth round of the consolation bracket in the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships yesterday.

The fifth day of the contest was run in 2-foot waves at Caparica Beach, Portugal.

Hendrickson was the only Hawai'i surfer to compete yesterday. The action was postponed after the morning heats when the conditions deteriorated.

All 12 surfers on the Hawai'i team are still in contention. Four other teams have 12 surfers in contention: Australia, Brazil, France and the United States.


GOLF

WISE, CHUN IN HUNT

New Mexico State's Lehua Wise, a Kaua'i High alum, and Stanford's Mari Chun, a Kamehameha graduate, shot 2-over-par 73s yesterday and were five strokes behind leader Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State after the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's West Regional at St. George, Utah.

Stanford leads the 21-team field with a 3-over 287 at the Entrada at Snow Canyon course. Brigham Young and Oklahoma State are tied for second at 291. Hawai'i is 15th at 313.

Wise and Chun were tied for 17th with four other golfers. Idaho's Kelly Nakashima, a Baldwin alum, was tied for 23rd after shooting a 74.

Xyra Suyetsugu and Corie Hou of Hawai'i shot 76s and were tied for 37th. Dale Gammie shot a 79 (tied for 68th), Nancy Shon a 82 (tied for 82nd) and Lisa Kajihara an 87 (tied for 98th). The low four scores count toward the team total.

Hawai'i is playing in its first NCAA regional after receiving an at-large berth.

SCHEIBACH QUALIFIES

Mark Scheibach of Bermuda Dunes, Calif., shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to capture medallist honors of a U.S. Open local qualifier at the Po'ipu Bay Resort and Golf Club on Kaua'i.

James Kawaihalau (74) of Lihu'e, and Eric Gibbs (75) of Fort Smith, Ark., finished as first and second alternates.

Scheibach advances to a 36-hole sectional qualifier in Murrieta, Calif., June 4.
