Kaua'i police open murder investigation in woman's death

WAILUA HOMESTEADS, Kaua'i — Kaua'i Police Department homicide investigators are looking into the death of a 65-year-old Wailua woman who died at Wilcox Hospital Thursday, possibly from injuries sustained during an altercation Wednesday night.

According to police, Marie Annette Mundon was holding one of her grandchildren while standing in her driveway at around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. The father of the child, a 27-year-old Wailua man, drove up to the house and got out of his vehicle. He shoved Mundon and grabbed the child from her, police said.

Marie's husband, James Mundon, 68, confronted the suspect, and was assaulted by him, police were told. When Marie attempted to pull her husband away, the suspect kicked her in the chest, police were told.

Marie Mundon complained of chest pains so her husband drove her to Wilcox Hospital, where she was treated for serious injuries. She died the next day.

James Mundon sustained minor injuries, but did not require medical attention.

Police took the suspect into custody. He is being held for questioning at the Kaua'i Police Department cellblock.
