Mayor Mufi Hannemann's Task Force on Drug Abuse is soliciting applications for funding for new anti-drug initiatives aimed at fighting alcohol and drug abuse among young people and in government. The state Legislature provided Honolulu $400,000 to combat drugs, and the Mayor's Task Force on Drug Abuse created a $200,000 Mayor's Anti-Drug Community Fund for youth programs and another $200,000 fund for the City Workforce program.
"The city is continuing its crusade to fight the drug problem in our community," Hannemann said. "We'll put this money to maximum use. Last year, we helped several dozen anti-drug organizations and programs. This time, we have more funds, and we're seeking proposals to work with my task force on drug abuse on an ambitious, exciting new campaign."
Dr. William Haning, chairman of the Task Force on Drug Abuse, said, "The grants provide the city with an exceptional opportunity to model public health approaches to drug use and develop plans that may then be used by other organizations."
Proposals are being sought for the Mayor's Anti-drug Community Fund programs for:
Youth: Grants of up to $50,000 to 501(c)3 organizations or government agencies for community-based substance abuse prevention programs, with priority given to drug education and awareness in the schools, community partnerships and non-school youth activities.
Workforce: Grants up to $100,000 to 501(c)3 organizations or government agencies to fund grassroots community efforts to sustain, foster and initiate anti-drug campaigns, particularly within the City and County of Honolulu work force.
