Diamond Head crater to close all day for concert

Advertiser Staff

HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources will close Diamond Head State Monument from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, to the general public due to the Diamond Head Crater Celebration planned for that day.

Diamond Head State Monument will open again for its regular hours, of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Sunday, May 20.

"Diamond Head crater is a great location for the public to enjoy music by local and out-of-state entertainers," Allan Smith, DLNR interim chairperson, said. "To protect this state monument and minimize the impact to the surrounding community, we have required the concert organizers to follow stringent guidelines, to prepare public safety and emergency plans.

"We are taking into account the concerns of the community in requiring the event organizers to mitigate parking and access, to have a security, fire and evacuation plan ready in the unlikely event of an emergency," he said.

All tickets include free reserved parking at convenient auxiliary lots and round-trip shuttle into the crater in order to minimize the environmental impact on the crater and surrounding neighborhoods. No walk-ins will be allowed at the event — all patrons will arrive via shuttle bus. Tickets on the day of the event are available from the Waikiki Shell box office beginning at 9 a.m.
