Hokule'a makes port visit in Fukuoka

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaiian sailing canoe Hokule'a has arrived in Fukuoka, Japan.

The Hokule'a and its escort boat Kama Hele, docked in Fukuoka, their fifth stop in Japan, about 10:30 p.m. Friday night, Hawai'i time, crew members reported.

Next stop: Oshima in the Yamaguchi prefecture.

Before then, crew members, many of whom have been aboard since the ship left Okinawa last month, plan to participate in youth seminars, make courtesy calls on local officials and hold workshops at local schools.

Many of the crew members from the Big Island also plan to visit Hiroshima on a personal journey to home of their ancestors, they said.

Weather permitting, Hokule'a and Kama Hele will depart Fukuoka on Thursday for Oshima, the area from which the second largest number of Japanese immigrants came to Hawai'i.
