The County of Maui's Department of Public Works and Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of unknown quantity occurred Friday morning in Kahului.

The spill, which was caused by a broken force main, was reported at 10:55 a.m. and was stopped by 11:45 a.m.

Alamaha Street, from the intersections of Wakea Avenue to Kamehameha Avenue, was temporarily closed to allow for repair work by county personnel.

The overflow poured out of a crack in the Maui Mall parking lot, near the intersection of Alamaha Street and Kamehameha Avenue in Kahului.

Wastewater entered a storm drain. Bacteriological analyses determined the wastewater did not reach the ocean, county officials said.

Standing water was removed and the area affected by the spill was disinfected,
