Off-duty firefighters help handle fire at Makiki condo

Two off-duty firefighters helped put out a condominium fire tonight that left one woman slightly injured.The firefighters, who live in the same 1122 Elm St. building where the fire broke out about 7 p.m., said they used a building fire hose to beat down most of the flames before on-duty firefighters arrived.
The fire in the fourth-floor condominium apparently started in the kitchen and was mostly contained there, said one of the firefighters, who did not give his name.
The two men said they were alerted to the blaze when they heard calls of "fire" coming from someone on the street. One firefighter lives on the second floor, the other lives on the eighth floor.
The 69-year-old occupant of the condominium, who called 911 when she spotted the fire, was treated at the scene by paramedics for an injury to her hand.
The fire caused an estimated $15,000 to the apartment and $5,000 to the apartment. The apparent cause was a stove that had accidentally been turned on, officials said.
