Benson, Quizon advance at surf meet

Tonino Benson of the Big Island and Alessa Quizon of Waianae advanced to the semifinals of their respective divisions in the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships today.

The seventh day of competition was run in 2- to 4-foot waves at Caparica Beach, Portugal.

Benson is one of six surfers remaining in the boys 18 division. Quizon is one of six remaining in the girls 18 division.

Three other Hawaii surfers were eliminated today:

Kai Barger of Maui lost in the ninth round of the consolation bracket in the boys 18 division; Dylan Goodale of Kauai lost in the ninth round of the consolation bracket in the boys 16 division; and Albee Layer of Maui lost in the sixth round of the consolation bracket in the boys 16 division.

Hawaii is in a battle for second place in the overall team standings entering the final day of competition.

Australia has already clinched first place.
