The power of pets

Today is the last day of National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week. End the celebration of our animals at "Pet Power" — this year's Hawaii Pet Expo, which brings together more than 80 exhibitors and a lineup of demonstrations and activities that ranges from a dog obedience rally (10:30 a.m. today) to mini lectures on basic rabbit care (2 p.m. today and tomorrow).

The annual expo is presented by the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association.

Of course the Hawaiian Humane Society, Aloha Cat Fanciers and Hawaiian Kennel Club will be there, as well as canine clubs (rottweiler, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Chihuahua, golden retriever, great Dane, Labrador retriever, Newfoundland, Shetland sheepdog, and the pit-bull alliance). Checking out the dog groups is a good way to find out about various breeds and, if you're thinking about purchasing a pooch, to decide which one might be right for your household.

Also in attendance will be representatives from boarding facilities, dog-park groups, trainers, pet sitters, Nozawa's Petting Zoo, even the Rubber Stamp Plantation and the Urban Search & Rescue K-9 Unit. Expect purveyors of (pet) treats, too. Vets will dispense free pet care advice.

Pets are welcome to attend with their humans, but of course, dogs will greatly outnumber cats and other critters. Dogs must be leashed and under control at all times.
