Bicyclist is Maui's 6th traffic fatality

By Rod Ohira

A bicyclist was killed yesterday on Maui when struck by a car while crossing Keolani Drive, six-tenths mile west of Halai Street.

The 7:59 a.m. accident closed a main access to Kahului Airport for nearly three hours.

The bicyclist was believed to be a 62-year-old man, but his name was not being released until his identity was confirmed.

Maui traffic investigators said the bicyclist was riding north on Keolani Drive near the intersection of A'alele Street when he appeared in the path of a 1990 Toyota Camry, which was headed west toward Kahului.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is Maui's sixth traffic fatality of the year as compared to five by this day in 2006.
