Graduation to open Kapa'a's new facility

A community effort which began two years ago has turned Kapa'a's home field of dreams on Kaua'i into a reality.

The home field at Kapa'a New Town Park today has portable bleachers, an 8-foot-high fence and its first scheduled event.

"They're scheduled to complete the fencing project by June 1 in time for Kapa'a High School's graduation, which will be the first big event held at the stadium," said Soncy Tamashiro, a member of the Leadership Kaua'i group that took on the challenge two years ago of facilitating the construction of a home field at the Kapa'a New Town Park.

"A lot of work on the Kapa'a home field is being done pro bono, including designing the locker rooms and irrigation and septic systems," Tamashiro added.

Na Ha Ewalu (The Breath of Eight) is the group spearheading the project. Members are John Cox, Michelle Lizama, Corey Nakamura, Char Ravelo, Matthew Taba, Caroline Texeira, William Trugillo and Tamashiro.

After the graduation ceremony, plans call for the installation of a scoreboard, goal posts, permanent bleachers and repaving of the parking lot.

"Our goal is to have the next phase completed in time for the (Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation) football season," said Mel Nishihara, county parks administrator.
