Nevada tops Hawai'i, 5-3, in WAC baseball

Rod Scurry overcame a shaky first inning and Terry Walsh drove in two runs to rally Nevada past Hawai'i, 5-3, tonight to win the second game of the three-game Western Athletic Conference series in Reno, Nev.Scurry (3-5) gave up three runs all in the first eight hits and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings for the second-place Wolf Pack (30-22 overall, 13-7 WAC). Jarad Mitchell added 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for his first save.
Matt Daly (5-2) allowed five runs (four earned), seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings for the Rainbows (31-21, 9-11).
The Rainbows wasted little time getting to Scurry in the first. With one out, Derek DuPree singled and scored on Justin Frash's double to right-center. Frash scored on Brandon Haislet's single to right. After taking second on a passed ball, Haislet took third on Kris Sanchez's single to right, but on the play, Sanchez was caught taking a wide turn at first for the second out of the inning. Vinnie Catricala followed with a single to right to score Haislet to make it 4-0.
The Wolf Pack struck back in the fourth. Konrad Schmidt doubled with one out, took third on a ground out to first and scored on Walsh's triple to right. Walsh also scored on second baseman Jon Hee's throwing error to the plate to pull Nevada to 3-2. Hawai'i coach Mike Trapasso argued the play at the plate and was ejected.
Nevada took the lead in the sixth. Jason Rodriguez led off with a walk and scored on Shaun Kort's double to center to tie the game at 3. After taking third on a ground out, Kort scored on Baker Krukow's sacrifice fly to center to give Nevada a 4-3 lead. Walsh then homered to center to make it 5-3.
