Charges filed in freeway roadblock incident

A driver suspected of crashing through a roadblock at a motor vehicle accident scene early yesterday was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Rhonel Paguirigan, 25, was released after posting $500 bail for the misdemeanor offense, according to police.

The bail amount is for a first-time offender. Paguirigan's appearance is scheduled for June 12 at 'Ewa District Court.

Two officers were injured when Paguirigan allegedly drove his speeding car through the roadblock a the H-1 Freeway near Makakilo at about 3:30 a.m. yesterday.

One officer sustained cuts and first-degree burns to his face, hands and arms when his blue-and-white patrol vehicle burst into flames after being hit by Paguirigan's car.

A second officer suffered a cut hand and neck strain.

Both officers were treated at Hawaii Medical Center-West and released.
