Money released for Youth Correctional Facility repairs

HONOLULU – Governor Linda Lingle has released $1,845,000 for improvement projects at the Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF) in Kailua.

"The Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility plays a key role in my Administration's effort to provide opportunities for positive change in the behavior of Hawai'i's youth," Governor Lingle said. "These important repairs are essential for the continued service of our young people."

Improvement projects include replacement of plumbing fixtures and installation of electronic door locks and electronic surveillance systems, as well as air conditioning and roofing repairs. The repair and maintenance will contribute to HYCF's compliance with a Memorandum of Agreement signed in February 2006 between the U.S. Department of Justice and the Hawai'i State Department of Human Services.

Design phases for the project began in March. Total cost of the project is estimated at $2,645,000, of which the remaining funds are included in the Administration's budget for 2008.

The primary purpose of HYCF is to provide safe and secure housing for juvenile offenders. HYCF provides a variety of counseling, treatment and educational services within the facility to aid in the redirection and rehabilitation of each minor.
