By Jeff Chung

"Dear Lover," a new series, is all about infatuation, tragedy, heartbreak and revenge.

Here is a Mother's Day gift for hallyu-crazed moms in Hawai'i — the new cable channel KLIFE. If the mother in your life doesn't have digital cable, she'll thank you for getting her hooked up. The Korean Lifestyle Channel on Oceanic digital cable 81, the newest addition to the KBFD family, is the company's third channel after launching KBS America a year and half ago on channel 80. KLIFE is the first Korean video-on-demand channel in Hawai'i and possibly the United States.

While KBFD and KBS America have ongoing scheduled programming, KLIFE video on demand allows you to watch on your schedule. KLIFE has four categories to choose from: music videos, dramas, movies and specials. Some programming such as dramas and movies have a fee for each viewing, but other programming such as music videos and specials are free. It may be confusing at first because you will have to press the blue button on the Oceanic digital cable box remote labeled "buy," but these programs are noted as "Free" on the description.

Music videos: KLIFE now has 34 music videos — including several by Rain, who will perform in Honolulu next month — to choose from. Browse through and watch as many as you want any time you want, for free. The videos are sorted by genre: rock, hip-hop, ballad, dance and so forth.

Drama: Now airing on KLIFE is "The New Choonhyang," a 17-episode series that has not yet run on any other channel in Hawai'i. Each episode costs $1.99 to view.

The series is based on Korea's most famous love story, a folktale about Choonhyang, a woman who falls in love with Mong Ryong and patiently waits for him in Namwon while he studies in Seoul. A corrupt local governor pressures Choonhyang to forfeit her love, but Mong Ryong comes to the rescue to bring justice and reunite with his love.

Every May, Namwon celebrates with a Choonhyang festival that includes a beauty contest. Some Korean stars got their start as Ms. Choonhyang. "The New Choonhyang" is a modern day twist on the traditional tale.

Specials: This category offers informational, educational and cultural shows. You can watch three programs: "My Friend Korea," a 15-minute program that has general information on Korea; "Hanguel," the history of the Korean alphabet; and "Korean Cinema Unleashed," an in-depth look at Korean cinema.

I've been watching music videos and one of my favorites is "Wind, Please Halt" by Loveholic. I also like "Korean Cinema Unleashed."

Don't forget, one of the coolest things about video on demand is that you can pause, rewind, fast-forward or simply stop and view another title.

Happy Mother's Day!

Keep visiting KLIFE: More music videos, dramas and specials will be added to the lineup.
