Benson,Quizon advance

Hawai'i's Tonino Benson surfed into the semifinals of the boys 18 division at the ISA World Junior Championships in Portugal.

Tonino Benson of the Big Island and Alessa Quizon of Wai'anae advanced to the semifinals of their respective divisions in the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships yesterday.

The seventh day of competition was run in 2- to 4-foot waves at Caparica Beach, Portugal.

Benson is one of six surfers remaining in the boys 18 division. Quizon is one of six remaining in the girls 18 division.

Three other Hawai'i surfers were eliminated yesterday:

Kai Barger of Maui lost in the ninth round of the consolation bracket in the boys 18 division; Dylan Goodale of Kaua'i lost in the ninth round of the consolation bracket in the boys 16 division; and Albee Layer of Maui lost in the sixth round of the consolation bracket in the boys 16 division.

Hawai'i is in a battle for second place in the overall team standings entering the final day of competition.

Australia has already clinched first place.

UH'S MURRAY WINS; 'BOWS SIXTH AT WAC

The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team capped its most successful showing at the Western Athletic Conference Championship with a sixth place finish yesterday at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field.

The Rainbow Wahine accumulated 96 points in the four-day meet and took home a total of six medals; three gold, two silver and one bronze.

Novelle Murray, who captured a bronze in the shot put on Friday, won a gold in the discus and silver in the hammer. The senior from Surrey, British Columbia, started the day with a personal-best throw of 196 feet, 1 inch in the hammer. She followed that with her third career gold in the discus after a personal-best heave of 185-2.

Hawai'i's Emily Sheppard (5-8 3/4) defended her WAC high jump title and teammate Mallory Gilbert (5-8 3/4) took second in a tie-breaker.

Louisiana Tech won the women's team title with 162 points followed by Nevada (123), Idaho (121), Boise State (116.5), Utah State (97.5), Hawai'i (97), Fresno State (82) and New Mexico State (20).

UH tied its highest finish at the WAC Outdoor Championship with the 2005 squad which accumulated 69 points and six medals.


SOFTBALL

UH-HILO LOSES, STILL ALIVE IN NCAA REGIONAL

Jessica Gaumnitz allowed four hits and struck out eight batters in six innings as Cal State Stanislaus beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-0, yesterday in the NCAA West Regional semifinals at Turlock, Calif.

It was the first loss of the tournament for UH-Hilo (42-12).

The Vulcans will play the winner of Seattle University-Humboldt State today for the chance to face Stanislaus (48-17) again for the tournament title.

Seattle was leading Humboldt State, 3-2, yesterday when the game was called due to darkness. It will resume this morning.
