John Doe 'satisfied' with settlement, attorney says

One of the lawyers for the unnamed non-Native Hawaiian student said the student is satisfied with the settlement of a lawsuit challenging the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiians-first admission policy.

"We've done the best we can for our client," said John Goemans, a Big Island attorney who now spends most of his time in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Goemans declined to discuss the terms of the confidential settlement.

Goemans and Sacramento attorney Eric Grant represent the teenager known only as John Doe and his mother who were asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals 8-7 decision upholding the policy. The appeals court had ruled the policy does not violate federal civil rights law.

Grant and Goemans had asked the high court to grant their request challenging the appeals court ruling. All the legal papers had been submitted and the parties were awaiting a decision on whether the justices would take the case when the settlement was announced.

As a result of the settlement, their lawsuit was dropped.
