Nevada completes WAC baseball sweep of Hawai'i

Kyle Howe pitched eight strong innings after a shaky start as Nevada rallied past Hawai'i again, 7-2, tonight to complete the Western Athletic Conference series sweep in Reno, Nev.

Howe (3-3) allowed two runs, six hits and a walk, while striking out nine for the Wolf Pack (31-22 overall, 14-7 WAC). Matt Renfree

Mark Rodrigues (8-3) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits with two strikeouts for the Rainbows (31-22, 9-12).

It was a double or nothing start for the Rainbows at the outset. Jon Hee led off the game with a double of the third baseman's glove and then scored on Derek DuPree's double to right.

In the third, Hee doubled to left with one out and one out later, scored on Kris Sanchez's double to left to make it 2-0.

The Wolf Pack tied it in the sixth. David Ciarlo singled and one out later took second on Jason Rodriguez's single. Shaun Kort singled to score Ciarlo and send Rodriguez to third. Rodriguez tied the game at 2 when he scored on Konrad Schmidt's sacrifice fly to right.

Nevada took the lead for the first time by batting around in a five-run seventh. With one out, Matt Suleski singled and took third on Chris Siewert's single. Rodrigues was pulled for Tyler Davis, who was greeted with an RBI-single by Ciarlo to give the Wolf Pack a 3-2 lead. Jason Sadoin walked to load the bases to set up Rodriguez's bases-clearing double to make it 6-2. Rodriguez took third when Kort grounded out to the pitcher then scored on Schmidt's double to make it 7-2. Davis was yanked for Jeff Soskin, who struck out Walsh to end the inning.
