Bloomberg News Service

Japan Airlines Corp., Asia's largest carrier by sales, plans to raise its ticket surcharges by as much as 21 percent because of higher jet fuel prices.

The levy on flights to Korea from Japan will increase to 1,700 yen ($14) a ticket from 1,400 yen beginning on July 1, the airline said in a statement today. The surcharge on flights to North America will rise to 12,000 yen ($99) from 11,000 yen ($91) and the extra charge for tickets to Brazil will increase to 15,500 yen ($128) from 14,500 yen ($119).

The price of jet fuel, the largest expense for Asian airlines, has risen 12 percent this year. The world's carriers may spend $120 billion on fuel this year, 7 percent more than in 2006, the International Air Transport Association said in March.
