ROME The Italian Open lost two more top-10 players today when No. 8 Ana Ivanovic and No. 7 Nicole Vaidisova withdrew.Ivanovic has a left ankle injury, and Vaidisova has a right wrist injury.
Top-ranked Justine Henin did not enter, No. 2 Maria Sharapova pulled out with a right shoulder injury and defending champion Martina Hingis withdrew with hip and back injuries.
The 18th-ranked Li Na withdrew yesterday with a stomach illness.
Ivanovic reached her career-high ranking by winning the German Open on Sunday. She said the injury occurred in the second set of the final against Svetlana Kuznetsova.
"I tried to recover for today's match, but during warmup this morning it was hurting much more," Ivanovic said. "I probably need a couple more days of rest, so I thought it was best to take it easy and hopefully recover."
Sara Errani of Italy replaced Ivanovic in the draw.
Vaidisova is still recovering from the wrist injury, which kept her out of last week's German Open.
