Barnwell profit drops to $1.26M

Barnwell Industries Inc., a Honolulu-based real estate company that also operates an oil and natural gas business in North America, said profit for 2007's first three months fell to $1.26 million, or 15 cents a share, from a year earlier.

In the same 2006 period, it earned $2.37 million, or 27 cents a share, helped by recognition of tax benefits of $1.96 million. The company also announced its board had declared a cash dividend of 5 cents a share, payable June 15 to shareholders of record as of June 1.


LEARN TO START A SMALL BUSINESS

The U.S. Small Business Administration will hold two free events next month on the Big Island to offer advice on how to start a new business.

The "Micro Enterprise 101" workshop will run from 9 a.m. to noon June 7 at the Hawai'i Community College's Building 379-1 to discuss what it takes to become an entrepreneur.

On June 8, representatives from the SBA and the Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network will meet individually with prospective owners from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Small Business Development Center Network office at 100 Pauahi St., Suite 109, in Hilo.

NATIVE HAWAIIAN EXPERTS TO SPEAK

Experts on ahupua'a restoration and Native Hawaiian arts are the scheduled guest speakers at Thursday's monthly luncheon meeting of the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce.

Aric Arakaki, National Park Service Superintendent at Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, will talk about his work on the Big Island and elsewhere. Arakaki is an expert in ahupua'a restoration and strategic planning for indigenous economic development.

Daniel Kaniala Anthony, a promoter of Native Hawaiian art and artists, will provide an update on the Maoli Arts movement and events that are scheduled for May.
