WAILUKU
Sewage didn't reach ocean

Advertiser Staff

Officials with the county Department of Public Works and Environmental Management said it does not appear that wastewater from a sewage spill yesterday in Waiehu reached the ocean.

The incident occurred when an unknown quantity of wastewater overflowed from a valve box into a drainage culvert on Lower Waiehu Beach Road.

The problem resulted from a broken air-relief valve on a force main, officials said.

The county also announced that tests related to a separate sewage spill Friday on Alamaha Street in Kahului indicate no wastewater reached the ocean.

That spill resulted from a broken force main.
