Legislative briefing on UH athletics set for Monday

Representatives of the University of Hawai'i athletic department will appear before the state House Higher Education and Senate Education committees on Monday.

Athletics director Herman Frazier is expected to be asked questions about operations of the state's only Division I-A athletic program in the wake of recent controversies over facilities and scheduling.

The "informational briefing," called by House Higher Education committee chairman Jerry Chang, will be at 2 p.m. in room 309 of the State Capitol.

UH coaches and school administrators also have been invited to the briefing.

UH has yet to announce the final two games of its schedule for the 2007 football season, which is due to open in less than four months.

Two weeks ago, quarterback Colt Brennan blasted the state of some facilities and leveled other complaints about operations at the school, comments that brought national headlines.

Chang said the purpose of the meeting is "to update committee members on the state of the athletics department, including but not limited to, its athletic programs, facilities and operations, sources of revenues and the use and distribution of such revenues, as well as, issues or concerns for improvements that the Legislature could address."

"If we don't know what the athletics department's problems and concerns are, we are not able to address them," said Chang in an e-mail to the media.
