WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — Honoka'a senior Sean Maekawa closed out his high-school career by winning the boys state golf championship today.

The two-day David S. Ishii Foundation / Hawai'i High School Athletic Association state tournament was held at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.

Maekawa, the first to win four Big Island Interscholastic Federation championships, won by four shots after shooting a final-round 4-under-par 68.

"I wrote down a bunch of goals when I was 10," said Maekawa, who will attend the University of Oregon in the fall on a golf scholarship. "I wanted to win a bunch of tournaments. That list is still hanging in my room and this is the first one. I have 10 or 11 more."

Maekawa's two-day total of 9-under 135 was four shots better than runner-up T.J. Kua, a Kamehameha Schools junior.

Kua shot even-par 72 today.

Kua captained Kamehameha to the team title.

The Warriors went into the final round a shot behind Punahou and won by three shots.

Kamehameha's four top-scoring golfers totalled 16-over 304 today for a two-day total of 596.

Punahou's total was 599. Maryknoll finished third at 618.
