Nutrition expert to speak June 12 to vegetarian group

Author Michele Simon will give a free talk on her book "Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health" at 7 p.m. June 12 at the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse.

Her talk is sponsored by the Vegetarian Society of Hawai'i. Refreshments will be served. She will discuss industrial food, "exposing the corporate greed and propaganda controlling our media and politics on critical issues of health and sustainability."

Simon is a public health lawyer who has been working as a nutrition advocate since 1996.

She has published numerous articles that include such issues as the National School Lunch Program, the Dietary Guidelines, and corporate lobbying. She lectures extensively and teaches Health Policy at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law where she also received her law degree. She earned her master's degree in public health at Yale University.
