KAILUA
$1.8M upgrade at youth prison

Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i Youth Correctional Facility in Kailua is getting a $1.8 million upgrade.

Gov. Linda Lingle last week released money for the project, which will include air conditioning and roofing repairs as well as replacement of plumbing fixtures.

The money also will be used for new electronic locks and surveillance systems at the facility, the state's primary secure home for juvenile offenders.

The improvements will help the state comply with an agreement signed in 2006 with the federal government to upgrade the facility.
