Advertiser Staff

The Dental Samaritans has awarded two grants totalling $5,200 for public service dentistry on O'ahu.

The Department of Dental Hygiene at the University of Hawaii-Manoa received a $2,000 grant that enabled students to provide oral health education at shelters in Kalaeloa and Kakaako as well as hygiene services at its UHM dental hygiene clinic.

The Waianae Comprehensive Health Center received a $3,200 grant to decrease the incidence of dental caries in youngsters with its in-school sealant program, coordinated by Dr. Dan Fujii and conducted by the center's dentists.

Established by the Hawaii Dental Association in 2001, the Dental Samaritans is an independent, non-profit organization comprised of HDA dentists who provide community grants for oral health projects as well as free services to patients of clinics and mobile care centers that treat the state's indigent and low-income populations.
