EPA files complaint against disenfectant maker

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has filed a complaint against the largest U.S. maker of hospital disinfectants alleging products collected from the manufacturer in Hawai'i, New Jersey, California and North Carolina showed the disinfectants did not work against common infection-causing micrroorganisms.

The EPA said it is seeking a penalty of $202,500 against Lonza Inc. It claimed the company's Formula 158 Lemon Disinfectant and other products did not kill pathogens as claimed.

"This company sold disinfectants that didn't deliver as promised, and did a disservice to doctors, staff, patients and the general public," said EPA Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg in a news release this week.

"EPA and its partners in the states will keep a close eye on these companies to make sure they pay for violations and discourage would be wrong-doers from making the same mistakes."
