Merrie Monarch winners will be on CBS show Tuesday

Advertiser Staff

Halau I Ka Wekiu, the hula halau that earned the overall group laurels in this year's Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, will be seen in a segment set to air at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on "The CBS Early Show."

The Honolulu-based halau is led by Karl Veto Baker and Michael Nalanikila'ekolu Casupang.

A CBS news team, hosted by Phil Keoghan ("The Amazing Race"), shadowed the halau members during last month's 44th annual Merrie Monarch Festival, often described as "the Olympics of Hula" and drawing both Island and Mainland hula competitors. The CBS crews worked with the Big Island Visitors Bureau and festival organizers to track the pulse of the male halau.

Halau I Ka Wekiu also was the overall group kane winner, group kane kahiko winner, and group kane 'auana winner.

The airtime is subject to change, according to CBS.
