UH to offer Women's Studies degree

Advertiser Staff

Starting this fall, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa will offer a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Women's Studies.

Women's Studies has been a recognized field of study for undergraduates at Manoa since the mid-1970s, but the BA degree has previously been offered through the Interdisciplinary Studies (formerly Liberal Studies) Program. The UH Board of Regents changed that at its monthly meeting earlier this week.

Nearly two dozen students have graduated with a major in Women's Studies through the Interdisciplinary Studies program since 2000, a UH news release said, and an additional 59 undergraduate certificates were awarded between 2000 and 2005.

UH officials anticipate the new degree program will expand to 50 student majors within five years.
