Konawaena stops Punahou for Division I hoops title

And the Wildcats got a measure of revenge in the process.
Liana Hanato-Smith hit four 3-pointers in the first half, Mana Hopkins scored 26 points and Jazzmin Awa-Williams added 15 as Konawaena, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10, beat Punahou, 59-47, tonight in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball Division I State Championship at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Kamehameha-Hawai'i made it a Big Island sweep, defeating Sacred Hearts, 57-30, for the Division II title.
Hopkins and Awa-Williams each grabbed nine rebounds.
Konawaena, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion and No. 2 seed, improved to 17-0 this season.
Punahou, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up, ended its season at 12-6.
Punahou, which trailed by 13 late in the first half, opened the third period with a 16-8 run to get within 37-33 with 3:34 left.
Chelsea Deptula and reserve Tressa Torres each scored four points during the run for the Buffanblu, who hit seven of their first nine shots in the third.
Konawaena led 43-37 entering the fourth.
Punahou was 8 of 11 from the field in the third, while Konawaena was 6 of 10, but with seven turnovers.
The Wildcats scored the first six points of the fourth to take a 49-37 lead with six minutes remaining.
Punahou got as close as seven the rest of the way.
Konawaena won the 2004 state title and lost to Punahou in double overtime in 2005.
Hanato-Smith hit Konawaena's first three shots all 3-pointers to give the Wildcats a 9-4 lead with 4:45 left in the first quarter. In two previous tournament games, the 5-foot-5 senior guard, scored 15 points in 62 minutes.
Hanato-Smith hit another 3-pointer to give the Wildcats a 25-11 lead with 1:15 left before halftime. Hopkins made a layup 13 seconds later to give Konawaena its largest lead at 27-14.
Hopkins had 13 points and six rebounds in the first half.
Awa-Williams, a two-time Advertiser All-Star selection, was 2 of 3 from the field in the half, but had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
For the game, Konawaena was 20 of 39 from the field against a full-court man-to-man defense. Punahou was 18 of 49 against a 2-3 zone.
