Hawai'i-Hilo's Pollock earns Ashe award

Hawai'i-Hilo men's tennis player Daniel Pollock has been awarded the National Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.

The honor is given annually by the association to the player who has best exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Pollock is a UHH health and physical education major from Manchester, England. He was selected the UHH Male Athlete for the Year for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Also earning national recognition were Michael Perez (Lynn University), Mike Knoedler (Florida Southern College), Teddy Mebounou (Northwood University) and Alex Kacamakis (Southwest Baptist University).

The final pool of nominees was comprised by five players from each of the eight NCAA Division II regions.

KAYAKING

WOODS SELECTED TO COMPETE ON U.S. TEAM

Kane'ohe's Brandon Woods is part of the national Canoe/Kayak team that will represent the United States at European competitions this month.

The team will then head to the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the 2007 ICF Canoe/Kayak World Championships in Duisburg, Germany.

Woods will race with California's Rami Zur in the K-2 500 meters.
