Fresno State outlasts Hawai'i in baseball, 7-5

Steve Susdorf's two-out, two-run single in the top of the 10th inning lifted Fresno State over Hawai'i, 7-5, tonight in Western Athletic Conference baseball.

It was the second declared sellout at Les Murakami Stadium with 4,581 tickets issued, but the turnstile count was 3,484, three shy of highest turnout of the season.

Jeff Soskin (0-1) allowed two runs in four innings of relief for the Rainbows (31-23 overall, 9-13 WAC), who can finish no higher than fifth with the loss.

With two outs in the 10th, Erik Wetzel and Steve Detwiler hit successive singles to chase Soskin, who was replaced with Tyler Davis. A wild pitch advanced the runners before Brian Lapin walked to load the bases. Susdorf then followed with his two-run single to put FSU ahead, 7-5.

Jason Breckley (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, strandeing the winning run on third in the ninth and adding a scoreless 10th for the Bulldogs (32-25, 17-5).

The Bulldogs didn't wait long to get on the board, scoring in the first. Erik Wetzel reached on a single to short, took second when Loren Storey grounded out to second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and after Brian Lapin struck out, scored on Steve Susdorf's opposite-field single to left before Ozzie Lewis lined out to third to tne the inning.

Fresno State added to its lead in the second. Tommy Mendonca singled with one out, took second when Dan Grubb grounded out to second and scored when David Hernandez reached on a single by beating Harrington covering the bag on a grounder to first baseman Kris Sanchez.

The Bulldogs kept on going in the third. A two-out, two-run home run to left by Ozzie Lewis made it 4-0. Alan Ahmady and Mendonca hit back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second to end Harrington's night for Jayson Kramer, who got Grubb to ground out to third to end the inning.

Hawai'i cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Jon Hee led off with a double to the left-center alley, took third when DuPree grounded out to first and scored on Justin Frash's ground-rule double to left. After taking third on a wild pitch, Frash scored on Brandon Haislet's sacrifice fly to left to make it 4-2.

The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth against Kramer. Mendonca led off with a single, took second on Grubb's sacrifice and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After David Hernandez struck out, Wetzel walked and Storey's double to left scored Mendonca to make it 5-2. Lapin walked to end Kramer's night. Jeff Soskin came in and got Susdorf to ground out to first to end the inning.

The Rainbows tied it in the ninth. With two outs, Eli Christensen walked and scored on Jon Hee's double. Burke was lifted for Brandon Miller, who gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Kevin Macdonald that made it 5-4. Frash's triple to right tied the game at 5. Miller was yanked for Jason Breckley, who got Haislet to ground out to him to send the game into extra innings.
