Extraordinary students to be honored Tuesday

The Board and Department of Education at a luncheon on Tuesday will recognize approximately 360 public secondary school students who in the 2006-07 school year represented their schools and Hawai'i in national competitions.

The recognition program will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Ballroom

Students to be honored include winners of national medals, trophies, scholarships, and awards.

Hilton Hawaiian Village and Aloha Airlines are corporate sponsors for the event.

The program, to be emceed by Justin Cruz, will begin with remarks by Hilton Hawaiian Village General Manager Noel Trainer, Aloha Airlines President and CEO David Banmiller, BOE Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto, BOE Chairperson Karen Knudsen, and Lt. Gov. James Aiona.

After lunch, Castle High School's Polynesian Music and Dance group will provide entertainment.

Each student will be recognized and presented with a medal beginning at 1 p.m.

The ceremony will conclude at 2 p.m. with all of the students assembled in song.
