Advertiser Staff

The man who was killed when his car went off a cliff on Maui today has been identified as Kevin P. Curran, 42, from Ozark, Mo.

The car went off a cliff on Highway 30 in the Honolua area about 3 miles north of Plantation Club Drive on the western side of Maui, officials said.

The white 2006 Ford Mustang was going south on Highway 30. Upon approaching a left turn, the vehicle missed the turn, went off the road, and went over a 140-foot cliff and into the ocean, police said.

A passerby who saw the car in the water called 911 shortly after noon.

Curran was thrown from the car and his body was recovered from the shoreline. He was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Next-of-kin provided positive identification.

The car is expected to be removed tomorrow or the following day.

Alcohol, speed and drugs are being investigated as factors in the accident, the Maui Police Department said.

This is Maui County's seventh traffic fatality for 2007, compared with five at this time last year.
