Maui officials said a man died after the convertible he was driving went off a 140-foot cliff in Honolua yesterday and into the ocean.

The accident occurred about 12:12 p.m., Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said. The man's identity was not released, pending notification of next of kin.

Another motorist driving in the region, which is in west Maui on the Lahaina side of Kahakuloa, called 911 after seeing the car go over the cliff.

Maui fire officials said it appeared that the man was alone in the car. The accident was still under investigation, Martin said.
