Spearfishing tourney in Mokule'ia Saturday

Advertiser Staff

Spear fishing specialists will take to the depths off Mokule'ia's Army Beach Saturday during a tournament that honors Gene Higa, a respected free diver who drowned while practicing the same sport. With a single breath of air, these divers can submerge for nearly two minutes but must be wary of deadly shallow-water blackout, which was suspected in Higa's death in 2004.

Check out the biggest fish tale and the biggest fish at the catch weigh-in at 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the awards party, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday at Rumours, will be donated to Jim Winand, a diver and firefighter suffering from cancer. Local band B.E.T. will perform. Tickets are $10, at the door.
